San Diego Opera is seeking between 40-50 participants for OPERA HACK: a two-day cross-collaborative event (July 27 & 28, 2019 at Microsoft Corporation in La Jolla, CA) to discover new methods for the production and presentation of live performance.

Selected participants will form interdisciplinary teams to identify specific constraints within live theater and explore various technological mediums to offer solutions.

Our Call for Participants is now open until April 5th, 2019 (see How to Enter).

OPERA HACK will culminate with teams proposing their best ideas for further expansion. Immediately following the event, San Diego Opera will select 4 to 7 teams to develop and present their respective concepts at a public event in Summer 2020.

Eligibility

We are looking for creative thinkers who thrive in a cross-functional environment and can offer:

A) Experience from within the working world of music/theater, including but not limited to: Technical Direction, Lighting Design, Composition, Costume Design and Construction, Performance, Theater Project Management, Stage Direction, and Scenic Design.

AND/OR

B) Experience in a creative field of technology, including but not limited to: 3D Printing, Projection & Integrated Theater Design; Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality; Creative Coding, A.I. and Machine Learning, Computer Vision and Haptics, Interactive Theater and Performance Art, and Live Streaming.

Previous experience within the field of creative technology is not required for music/theater applicants. Previous experience with music or live performance is not required for tech applicants.

The deadline for application is Friday, April 5, 2019. Potential applicants will be reviewed by a national panel of advisors and final event participants will be selected and notified by April 19, 2019.

Only the final selected participants will participate in Opera Hack (July 27 & 28, 2019).
